Canadian ECO Project

Independent echocardiography interpretation skills have never been assessed in a standardized, validated way, training has relied on clinical experience alone.

The Canadian ECO Project developed and validated the National Echocardiography Interpreter Test, an eight-case assessment scored against expert consensus reports. Beginning December 2026, the test becomes the national Independent Interpreter Level II certification Assessment for PGY6 trainees across Canada.

Echocardiography Competency Evaluation & Optimization

National Echocardiography Interpreter Test

  • 8 complete cases covering ventricular, valvular, prosthetic, pericardial, congenital, and vascular pathologies

  • Findings and summary sections scored against expert-derived gold standard reports

  • National exam dates: Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2, 2026

Gold standard reports are independently reviewed by four echocardiographer educators and a clinical educator sonographer, then reconciled by a panel of echocardiographers for final consensus.

AR Platform

  • The Test is delivered through Augmented Reporting (AR), a secure cloud-based platform that hosts anonymized cases, administers the assessment, and supports formative practice and feedback for trainees.
